King Charles’s Miserable Commonwealth Day Dominated By Andrew Crisis
The King will put on a brave face, but the monarchy’s global reputation has never been worse, and foreign leaders know it.
Commonwealth Day was once one of the most joyous days on the royal calendar.
The royals would troop into Westminster Abbey and glad hand a cast of worthy characters from all over the country and indeed the world.
It won’t be like that today, with a very pared down cast of characters and some interesting and challenging conversations for King Charles likely, as he is expected to mingle and chat with several leaders of Commonwealth ‘realms’ (where the monarch is head of state).
The Sunday Times reports that the King will raise with them the fraught possibility of removing Prince Andrew from the line of succession.
The palace has moved in recent weeks to let it be known that they will support any moves to strip Andrew from his position, but any such move would require the agreement of all fifteen Commonwealth realms.
There is now increasing pressure on the palace to also remove Andrew’s daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, from the line of succession. An email surfaced yesterday showing Andrew leaning on a business contact to send “£50,000 each” to his daughters.
