The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were handed the property by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 as a “grace and favour” residence (a rent-free home granted at the monarch’s discretion) having moaned about the inadequacy of their previous also free home Nottingham Cottage in the Kensington Palace grounds, and quickly set about refurbishing it using taxpayer-funded renovations, later repaid after their dramatic exit from royal duties and relocation to Montecito, California.
